Through the mists of time

Article Abstract:

The Royal Academy of Arts in London, England, is currently staging an exhibition of the work of 19th century Japanese artist Utagawa Hiroshige entitled 'Images of Mist, Rain, Moon and Snow.' This exhibition is mainly made up of the artist's landscape prints, with land and sea locations being shown in all weathers. Hiroshige's work gives no real sense that he was a contemporary of western artists of the time, but it is possible to regard it as a variation upon western art. He has a strong sense of visibility conditions, and shows separate items which combine to form an atmospheric whole.
