UK: ABP PLAN AT DIBDEN TO AFFECT NEW FOREST
Article Abstract:
Plans by Associated British Ports (ABP) to develop a large container port at Dibden Bay have been criticised by environmentalists who fear that it could have a damaging impact on the New Forest. Under the proposals, Dibden would become one of the largest docks in Europe covering an area of 990 acres, creating 1,800 full-time jobs and helping to secure the shipping industry at the port of Southampton. However environmentalists argue that the plan, which would be close to the eastern fringe of the New Forest, is completely out of character with the area. They maintain that if approval is given the New Forest would be cut off from the sea and would affect important nesting habits for wintering wildfowl. Much of the area is already designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest or Special Protection Area, which means that developments can only be undertaken in cases of overwhelming national interest.

Early bird is key to global warming
Article Abstract:
The UK government has selected 35 indicators as a measure of the progress of global warming. These include the arrival of the first swallow in spring, the number of possible skiing days in Scotland, the leafing dates of oak trees and the number of human cases of Lyme Disease, caused by a tick that is present in large numbers in warmer weather. Strong evidence is already beginning to emerge that global warming is having a significant impact on natural events such as the leafing of trees and the emergence of butterflies.
