UK: AIR TRAFFIC CONTROL COMPUTER PROBLEMS

Article Abstract:

The failure of the National Air Traffic Service (NATS) in mid June 2000 has been blamed on a computer system that is up to 30 years old. The both the hardware (an IBM mainframe) and the software (based on the Jovial programming language) are now both out of production, and have been for many years. Many key elements that caused the failure of the computer system are not due to be replaced for another seven years. It is believed that a latent bug in the original software caused the problem, which resulted in sever delays to all flights in and out of Heathrow, Stansted and Gatwick airports.

UK: RESEARCH INTO AIRCRAFT RADIATION LEVELS

Article Abstract:

Research into the levels of radiation from the sun affecting aircraft and the effect on crew and passengers is to be carried out by the Civil Aviation Authority in the UK. Although European Union rules require all aircraft crew to be tested regularly against radiation overdoses, little is known about why radiation levels vary and the long-term impact. The airline Virgin Atlantic is to carry monitoring equipment on its aircraft.
