Dances with Mei Langang: Brecht and the alienation effect
Article Abstract:
Bertolt Brecht's directing and writing style was influenced after 1935 by his witnessing a performance of traditional Chinese theater by Mei Lanfang. Brecht saw Lanfang arouse empathy in his audience, and felt audience identification with the actor was a necessary element of effective drama. Brecht also noted Lanfang's precise use of formal conventional movements, and wanted actors to create what he called the "alienating" effect by using a performance style that used bodily movement and facial expression to show inner feelings.
