UK: TAX LEVELS ON THE RISE
Article Abstract:
The opposition Conservative Party has attacked the government's election promise not to raise taxes by pointing to new figures that show the tax burden in the UK has increased in the last two years. Gross Domestic Product (GDP) divided by tax revenue and social security contributions shows a tax burden of 37.7% for the second quarter 1999, which has risen gradually from 35.6% in the second quarter 1997. Although the government reports a lower level, its political opponents say this is because the Working Families Tax Credit is treated as negative taxation.
