UK: BRITVIC TO BECOME PART OF PEPSICO?
Article Abstract:
Analysts believe that drinks company Britvic, could become a target for US giant PepsiCo, which already holds a 10% stake in the company. Britvic, which is owned by Bass, distributes Pepsi in the UK, and also produces the Tango and Robinson brands. In the six months to April 2000 it had a turnover of GB[pound] 270mn, and operating profits of GB[pound] 9mn, an increase of 12.5% from 1999. The sell-off has arisen as a result of the acquisition of Bass by Interbrew of Belgium for GB[pound] 2.3bn last month, and the subsequent announcement that it planned to sell off its brewing interests. PepsiCo remains a strong favourite to acquire Britvic, although other potential bidders could include AG Barr, the producer of Irn Bru, a management team, or a venture capital company. The only question concerning analysts is whether it would be more profitable for PepsiCo to acquire the company outright, or just remain as a minority shareholder. A takeover would see Britvic valued between GB[pound] 300-450mn.

US/UK: DRINKS FIRMS ACCUSED OF AIDING ADDICTION
Article Abstract:
A new US study has alleged that soft drinks companies are adding caffeine to carbonated products to make them more additive, as opposed to adding it purely for taste. The report, which surveyed 25 adults, revealed that 92% of consumers who drink cola-flavoured beverages on a regular basis could not taste the caffeine at a concentration of 0.1mg per millilitre. The majority of the group could not taste the difference between caffeinated and caffeine-free cola until levels were increased higher then legally permitted. However, Christine Milburn of the British Soft Drinks Association claims that caffeine is not a drug, it is a flavouring that is found in many products. In the UK alone, 5560mn litres of carbonated soft drinks are sold annually, with colas representing 49%, of these over 95% contain caffeine.
