UK: CD PLAYERS TO LURE PASSENGERS ONTO TRAINS

Article Abstract:

By the end of 2000, passengers travelling club class on First Great Western trains travelling the London-Bristol-Cardiff and Cotswold routes, will be able to plug into in-built CD players on train journeys and listen to a variety of music. Headphones will be available for purchase or passengers may opt to use their own. Holyhead to Birmingham travellers will be the first to experience the new CDs. Virgin is also planning a similar venture, available to passengers on its London-Glasgow trains in 2002. The CD players will be available to all of those travelling standard and above and will consist of a choice of four stations that include: easy listening, radio, popular music and a fourth yet to be decided.

UK: EUROTUNNEL IN DEBT BUYBACK MOVE

Article Abstract:

Anglo-French consortium, Eurotunnel, plans to buy back nearly GB[pound] 1.5bn worth of debt, with owners of junior debt of GB[pound] 3.6bn being asked to dispose of as much as 40% of their holdings. The move is part of the ongoing financial restructuring of Eurotunnel and the tender, which is being organised by Merrill Lynch and Dresdner Kleinwort Benson, should attract US hedge funds that bought into the group two years ago. The move follows a request from lenders keen to sell out but unable to due to a debt liquidity problem.

UK: VIRGIN TRAINS PLANS EAST COAST BID

Article Abstract:

Virgin Trains plans to bid for the primary East Coast franchise and aims to reduce journey times between London and Newcastle to two hours and 15 minutes from two hours and 50 minutes. The UK-based operator, which provides West Coast London-Scotland services, plans to offer 140mph trains before the existing operator of the East Coast line.
