UK: STRATEGIES AT WOLVERHAMPTON & DUDLEY BREWERIES

Article Abstract:

Wolverhampton & Dudley Breweries, the UK regional brewer, is thought to be embarking on a number of rationalisation strategies, following the announcement of poor interim results on 26 May 2000. It is expected to close at least one of four brewing sites, probably in Mansfield, in order to streamline its operations. It maintains that it will not sell its Pitcher & Piano chain, despite rumours to the contrary. The group's aim is to focus on the potential of its existing assets. There is some speculation that it may be subject to takeover bids, with venture capital group Alchemy, Nomura, Punch Group and Enterprise Inns named as possible interested parties in all or part of the company.

They're not only here for the beer

Article Abstract:

Whitbread has a long association with brewing, but is now gradually shifting away from this sector and towards leisure retailing. Indeed, it will have to sell its brewing activities if its bid for the pub chain owned by Allied Domecq is successful. The company is benefiting from a strong balance sheet and cash flow, and is seeking to expand its hotel business. It is also investigating new areas of the leisure market, and is considering what may replace bingo halls.
