The grey world of trade unions, staffed by grey men

Article Abstract:

Old-style trade unionism is dying out in the UK, with no new form of trade unionism having yet emerged to replace it. However, Prime Minister Tony Blair must still present a convincing argument for why the unions should work with him.

Unions should recognise that a brighter future awaits them outside New Labour

Article Abstract:

The UK government is keen to remain at a distance from the trade unions. This will be reflected in trade union recognition, which will be surrounded by many conditions. Against this background, it is now time for the trade unions to assess what their purpose is and whom they serve. They should realize that they will not gain any real concessions from the government, and should focus much more on extending their services to members, thus boosting membership numbers.

Saying sorry seems to be a very hard lesson to learn

Article Abstract:

UK Chief Inspector of Schools Chris Woodhead has been accused of concealing the truth about the starting date of a relationship with a former pupil. This has prompted National Union of Teachers leader Doug McAvoy to call for Woodhead's resignation, not for personal reasons but because he has failed to support schools or teachers. In fact, if Woodhead does resign, it should be only for personal reasons, as these reasons, rather than his work at the Office of Standards in Education, are why he is coming under pressure. It is unfortunate for Woodhead that he has largely been the cause of his own misfortune.
