Warning: that acquisition may not mean the pay rise you're expecting

Article Abstract:

One of the main reasons executives tend to favour acquisitions is because they believe that an acquisition will boost their own income. This may be a reasonable belief, given that executive salaries are closely linked with company turnover. However, research indicates that executive salaries are actually more directly affected by sales growth prior to an acquisition than by developments after the acquisition. Indeed, an acquisition may actually have a negative impact on executive salaries if it proves unsuccessful.

Increasing fraud makes forensics a growth industry

Article Abstract:

Litigation support, or forensic accounting, is in great demand as fraud increased to 279 cases with losses of 100,000 pounds sterling from 1987-1992. Peat Marwick started forensic practice at the turn of the century but increased its staff form four to 35 in the years 1990-92. These departments offer fraud investigation, prevention advice, expert opinion in legal actions on suitable damages and accounting, auditing and general business advice. They also work with the Serious Fraud Office.

Article Abstract:

The UK government's White Paper 'Accounting for the Taxpayer's Money' sets down plans for extensive changes to the public expenditure system. Government departments will have to focus on their efficiency in managing public resources, rather than on spending, and will have to follow 'resource' accounting methods. However, some observers have expressed doubts about whether this will really lead to government departments being better run.
