When PC gives equality a bad name

Article Abstract:

The recent publicity surrounding equal opportunities policies operated by Islington council, under which concerns about 'political correctness' prevented action being taken to stop the abuse of children in care, has highlighted the damaging extremes to which political correctness can be taken. The case has strengthened the position of those who see political correctness as dogmatic and misguided. However, care should be taken not to go to the other extreme, returning to a time of blatent prejudice against minorities.

The cost of being Europe's squaddies

Article Abstract:

The UK government has decided to invest in 386 new Challenger tanks and 64 EH101 battle helicopters, as well as purchasing more Eurofighters than any other country. The UK still invests 3.1% of GDP in defence, compared with only 1.7% for Belgium and Germany and 1.5% for Spain. Many observers feel that such extensive investment in defense is unnecessary at a time when education and health spending is severely limited and the UK is mostly unlikely to be involved in war in anything other than a peacekeeping role.

Yes, the old order is dead - and it's women you should be thanking

Article Abstract:

Social commentator Francis Fukuyama is right to claim that women have been the driving force behind the social revolution which began in the UK in 1965. He claims that society is now living through extremely significant changes, with women having thrown of the social ties with which they used to be bound. This has led to a shifting in the balance of power, money and freedom between men and women. Society is still in a state of transition, and it is unclear where the social revolution will lead.
