A number of UK insurance companies offer cover for special events. Special Event Insurance Services launched Outdoor Events Insurance in January 1996, offering 1 million pounds sterling liability cover for events with under 1,000 visitors lasting up to four days for a 50 pounds sterling premium. Eagle Star, which dominates the market for cover against bad weather, charges from 102.50 pounds sterling for Pluvius policies. Cornhilll, which dominates the market for liability cover offers 1 million pounds sterling cover for 71.75 pounds sterling for up to two days.

United Kingdom medical insurance (PMI) covers some 6 million people, and it tends to be expensive. Companies may provide PMI for employees who arethen surprised by how much it costs if they leave their jobs and have to pay for it themselves. Tax relief on premiums was available, but was removed in the 1997 Budget. Consumers may seek cheaper insurance but changing an insurer may mean a rise in premiums due to age. There are a number of exclusions that are common with this type of insurance such as diabetes.

Policy on illness to alter, say brokers

Improvements in medical technology will eventually reduce the number of life-threatening conditions and thus cut premiums on critical illness policies. In the shorter term, however, the opposite will happen because of higher detection levels. This could soon prompt insurers to make substantial changes to new contracts to stop premiums rising very sharply.
