When the drugs do work

Article Abstract:

Nabilone, a synthetic cannabis preparation, has been found to be effective in controlling the severe nausea and vomiting associated with some forms of chemotherapy for cancer. It is officially approved only for hospital use in the UK, but any doctor may prescribe it for other purposes, as long as the patient is aware that there are risks involved. However, many doctors are unwilling to prescribe Nabilone, especially as it is very expensive. It seems unacceptable that this drug, which is tetrahydrocannabinol, probably the main active ingredient of cannabis, should not be more widely available for deserving patients.

US: NEW PILL TO CURE MYOPIA

Article Abstract:

Scientists in the US are developing a drug to cure myopia, or short-sightedness, in adults by treating the misshaped growth of the eye. Trials of a gel, which contains the stomach ulcer drug pirenzepine, are already underway on 25 children in the US. However, some researchers claim that the treatment, which may be turned into a pill, is not viable as it would have to be taken on a daily basis for more than a decade. At the end of August, 250 children in Hong Kong, Singapore, Thailand and Taiwan will join the trials at Valley Forge Pharmaceuticals in California.
