Why dons need to learn to go for it

Article Abstract:

The UK has a poor record for exploiting its resources of knowledge and inventiveness commercially. The government, universities and funding agencies all seem to lack ambition, in sharp contrast with the US. However, there are indications that this situation is now beginning to improve. Four university vice-chancellors and seven heads of technology transfer have visited the US to gain an insight into how academic work can be made a commercial success. New approaches could include creating self-sustaining local networks of lawyers, accountants and patent agents to support academics.
