Why we suffer motorway sadness
Article Abstract:
Some UK roads are in bad condition as the budget for road maintenance is falling. In 1997 the budget is expected to be 250 million pounds sterling, versus 360 million pounds sterling in 1994/95. According to correspondence from the chief executive of the Highways Agency, Lawrie Haynes, to Nicholas Winterton, UK Member of Parliament, the financial situation means that some roads will get worse, but the Highways Agency anticipates being able to hold down the impact on value for money and usability by being innovative and working hard.

Dealer who strove to shine with PM
Article Abstract:
There are a number of indications that multi-millionaire diamond broker Willie Nagel attempted to create positive links with the UK Conservative party in the early 1990s. He made a number of large contributions to the Conservative Association in Huntingdon, England, the constituency of Prime Minister John Major, and also wrote to Major on several occasions. During the course of 1994, relations between the two sides became strained, but Nagel is still in Conservative circles.
