Wild in Dhaka, sleepy in Sofia

Article Abstract:

Bangladesh's stock market have become the best performing stock market in the world in sterling terms over 1996. However, the market remains very illiquid, and stocks are expensive. In Belgium, the 325 stocks traded on the Brussels Stock Exchange returned only 4,2% in 1996. Brazil's stock market performed very well in 1996 with returns of more than 33% for the 550 companies listed there. There are still severe economic problems in Bulgaria, and it is best to avoid the around 20 stocks listed in Sofia.

From C to D in markets

Article Abstract:

The Colombian stock exchange is currently performing very badly, and the country is finding it hard to attract foreign investors. However, Colombia has no fundamental economic problems, and benefits from low interest rates. The Czech Republic is more attractive to foreign investors, offering a well-developed industrial sector and a strong tourist industry. In Denmark, the economy seems to be recovering, but there are still problems with high unemployment and the cost of the social welfare programme.

For big gains, go abroad

Article Abstract:

It is wise to include some overseas stock in an investment portfolio, especially in the light of high returns which have been achieved on more exotic markets recently. In Argentina, there should be long-term support for equities as a result of the introduction of domestic pension funds in 1994, while in Australia resource stock are particularly important. In Austria it is vital to pick stocks carefully, as economic performance has been weak recently.
