Will you be doing DIY today?
Article Abstract:
Do-it-yourself (DIY) has become an extremely popular leisure pursuit in the UK, with people now spending an average of 1.6 hours a week on DIY. However, some observers are concerned about the recent news that Sainsbury's is adding the Texas Homecare DIY chain to its Homebase chain, as they believe that it will create an extremely powerful player in the market. People who have very little DIY experience will be tempted to tackle advanced jobs, believing that they do not need to employ a professional builder. This will inevitably lead to poor work and often cause marital disharmony.

Too important for politics
Article Abstract:
The UK's political parties seem to have little real interest in architecture. The Labour party's document on cultural policy, for example, gives considerable attention to participation and democratic processes, but offers little sense of real direction. Among politicians of all parties, architecture tends to be viewed in economic terms, with beauty and delight being almost completely ignored. It is vital for a future government to reconstruct the planning process if good new architecture is to become possible.

At Waterloo the English did surrender
Article Abstract:
The British have traditionally been opposed to a rail link with continental Europe, but many have now revised their views, regarding the new Waterloo International station, from where trains leave for Europe, with awe. The station has caught the imagination of ordinary people, which is unusual for a modern building. It has a particularly romantic appeal, being associated with journeys to more exotic locations.
