Women on the edge of ecstasy

Article Abstract:

The IKON Gallery in Birmingham, England, is exhibiting 'Let the Priests Tremble,' a large free-form mural painting by American artist and feminist Nancy Spero. This covers all four sides of the gallery's largest room, and contains many multi-coloured female figures floating between the floor and the ceiling. The collage technique lifts the figures out of their times and places and brings them together. The gallery is also showing 'Tuberama,' a part video, part installation work by Georgina Starr.

Blurred visions worthy of the Turner Prize

Article Abstract:

The Museum of Modern Art in Oxford, England, is holding an exhibition of the work of artist Mona Hartoum, who may well win the Turner Prize in 1998. Her sculptures and installations often have links with flesh and instruments, but she takes a very serious approach to her work. She makes extensive use of ambiguity, and this means that viewers can sometimes extract undesirable meanings from her work. Some pieces depend for their effect on being disturbing, and this is not always the case.
