Wrongful conviction that could cost lives
Article Abstract:
Development work was undertaken in the UK in the early 1980s on the use of the solvent dichloromethane (DCM) to extract fat from animal offal which has been pulped and heated under pressure, known as grieves. This high-protein residue is fed to cattle. However, a report from the US Environmental Protection Agency indicated that DCM caused cancer in mice, and UK companies which processed abattoir waste therefore turned to an alternative method of extracting fat. This used lower temperatures, and therefore allowed the causative agent of Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE) to remain in the food chain.

Send Doris a message she cannot ignore
Article Abstract:
Smell is a little-used sense but the perfume industry makes high profits because its product is 80% alcohol. Human bodies make smells themselves, including androstenone, which may attract the opposite sex. Men produce more androstenone than women, and they make more of it in the winter. Perfumes convey a message, usually something suggestive. Deep notes in perfumes are based on the sex glands and excretory organs of animals. Musk is a powerful sex-attractant for female deer, which humans appreciate when it is diluted.

It ran dirigibles, but could it run your car?
Article Abstract:
Liquified hydrogen was first used for the vacuum flask by James Dewar in It is used as fuel in the US space programme. It can be used as fuel for cars but storage is difficult. The Nissan Fairlady Z sports model was demonstrated at the Musashi Institute of Technology in Jun 1992. The annual world production of hydrogen, mainly for the chemicals industry, is 30 million tons. Cheap methods of hydrogen generation are under research.
