For once, we need the smack of firm government

Article Abstract:

Issues raised by the UK government's refusal to ban childminders from smacking the children in their care and from smoking in front of these children are discussed. It is argued that smacking children cannot be justified.

Are we grown-up enough yet for the smack of weak government?

Article Abstract:

It is still very unclear how the UK government wishes to restructure the House of Lords to create a new form of second chamber. The key issues when debating this subject are what a second chamber should do and how it should be selected. It seems clear that a second chamber should operate as a restraint on the executive and be a forum where the government can reconsider its plans. The best approach may be to have a second chamber in which around 85% of the members are directly elected by proportional representation from regional lists, with the rest being nominated by civic bodies.

Yes, I smack my kids too - but it's an admission of my failure

Article Abstract:

The recent case of a school teacher who was found guilty of assault after smacking his daughter in a dentist's waiting-room has highlighted controversial issues relating to corporal punishment of children. Many ordinary parents believe that it is acceptable to use a limited amount of physical violence occasionally to discipline their children. In most cases, this need not make parents feel guilty. However, it also important to recognize that smacking children represents a failure of love and imagination. It would be better to take time to devise non-violent ways of disciplining children in a loving way.
