Iraq officially opened the Third River canal, which runs between the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers, in a public ceremony on Dec 7, 1992. The salt-water drainage canal has been under construction since 1953. Southern Iraq's marshlands may be threatened by the canal's discharges.

Fourth-quarter output to remain flat
Article Abstract:
OPEC agreed to maintain oil production at 24.2 million barrels per day in 4th qtr 1992. The ministers believe the production freeze will raise prices to $21 per barrel. Ecuador withdrew from OPEC citing fees and production limits.

Japanese astronomy was internationalized between 1972 and 1992 due to the growth of radio and x-ray astronomy. Noteworthy projects include the Ginga satellite, Astro-D, the Yohkoh mission and a space radio interferometry project.
