In search of Africa's forgotten forest elephant

Scientists have only recently begun to study the forest elephant, a smaller, jungle-dwelling version of the African savannah elephant that may be a distinct species. The census and analysis of its dung provide knowledge of the species' population and impact on rain-forest ecology.

An overview is presented of a tour which is available to the bushveldt of South Africa, which is known as 'Big Game Country'. The tour includes visits to several parks and reserves in the late spring and early summer, when many of the animals are having their young.
