Information networks and competitive advantage: issues for government policy and corporate strategy

Article Abstract:

Competition in the telecommunications sector has created a bewildering array of different technologies for business to integrate itself with. Most businesses are beginning to learn the joint importance of organizing infrastructure and managing its use, but some industries have been slow to adapt their managing styles to take advantage of the speed and flexibility the technology can offer. The US government's decision to liberalize the industry has created opportunities for success, but has also made the market less flexible, as many incompatible systems of transmission now exist.

The international society has steadily become integrated in a borderless economy towards the 21st century. The accessibility to a common market in such an economy will promote a new era of mega-competition. Some of the new high-technology industries that are forecast to succeed in the 21st century include computer, electronics, superconductivity technology, biotechnology, and information technology industries.
