Computing benefits stops at IT spending
Article Abstract:
The effectiveness of information technology (IT) is increasingly being questioned in the absence of any concrete evidence that this technology really contributes to a company's bottom line. Such evidence is scarce since very few companies formally measure the effectiveness of their IT. But even if they did evaluate their IT's performance, the available measuring methods are so narrow in scope that the true value of IT to organizations may not be revealed. What is needed is a comprehensive approach to measuring IT performance which addresses the whole spectrum of issues pertaining to the technology's effectiveness. This measure should also go beyond delivery efficiency and should consider the issues of economy, quality, control and security as well. British companies spend 12 billion pounds sterling on IT annually, and it is high time that the return on this huge investment be measured.

Power booster
Article Abstract:
Many utilities and other energy industries are using repowering to reinvigorate aging plants. Repowering integrates new equipment with usable existing equipment to increase thermal efficiency, reduce emissions, minimize environmental impact and extend plant life. Repowering gained popularity after the success of the $578 million repowering effort for the Manchester Street Power Plant in Providence, R.I. Many fossil-fuel power plants may use repowering to meet environmental regulations and improve competition with independent power producers.
