Shining Soft X-rays on Magnetic Structures
Article Abstract:
Soft x-rays allow detailed insight into the properties of magnetic structures containing 3d transition metals. Developments in polarizers and wave retarders further allow for the analysis and modification of the state of polarization. A study on the power of x-ray magneto-optics of single crystalline FePd layers is discussed.

Small Is Beautiful
Article Abstract:
Researchers have developed several techniques for studying the magnetic properties of a single sample with at least two dimensions that are less than a micrometer. Reducing sample size allows the testing of theoretical models and has applications to reducing the dimensions of magnetic recording media.

Seeking a simple complex system: condensed matter physics
Article Abstract:
Research on magnetic materials suggests that disorder is not necessary for the complexity found in minimum-energy states. The application of these results to research on superconductor networks and spin systems is discussed.
