Preachers and souls
Article Abstract:
Pope John Paul will visit India in Nov 1999, and the visit has led to protests from some Hindu activists who see Christianity as representing conversion, which they link to colonialism. This is especially true for north-eastern India where there are Christian majorities in a number of states. Christianity accounted for 2.3% of India's population in 1991 compared with 2.4% for 1981, so such fears appear to be exaggerated, though reliable data on numbersof Christians and conversions are difficult to obtain.
