An open letter to every medical student who aspires to become a leader in academic geriatric medicine
Article Abstract:
Medical students who aspire to become leaders in academic geriatric medicine, a field offering unrivaled opportunity, should plan for 17 years of higher education and training after high school followed by 2-5 years of junior faculty status, during which at least 75% of time should be protected time for focus on research. . They should start on research while still in medical school to improve chances of success. If the student does not revel in discovery, perhaps an academic career is not the right choice. A residency program in internal medicine that hosts a highly rated academic geriatric fellowship should be sought.

The role of the geriatrician in managed care: opportunities and responsibilities
Article Abstract:
HMO settings can benefit from the expertise of geriatricians. Responsibilities include program manager for Medicare, advocate/liaison for special programs, and clinician for special populations or projects. Time estimates for each category are provided. A creative approach is encouraged within the complex demands of modern health care and a steadily aging patient base.
