Contrasting results between caregiver's report and direct assessment of activities of daily living in patients affected by mild and very mild dementia: the contribution of the caregiver's personal characteristics

Article Abstract:

Caregivers may assess the activities of daily living (ADLs) in dementia patients differently than independent observers. Depending on the sense of burden and depression reported by the caregivers of 111 dementia patients, agreement of ADLs varied widely except on motor performance (walking). Specifically, observed handling of money, toilet or telephone use, and shopping skills differed from the generally poorer impressions of caregivers. Discrepancies between ADL scores were often related to the demands placed on the caregiver's time.

History, development, and future of the progressively lowered stress threshold: a conceptual model for dementia care

Article Abstract:

The advances in geriatric nursing theory, practice, and research based on the Progressively Lowered Stress Threshold (PLST) model that are designed to promote more adaptive and functional behavior in older adults with advancing dementia are presented. Care planning principles and key elements of interventions are proposed and the outcomes from numerous research projects using the PLST model are described.

Dementia family caregiver training: affecting beliefs about caregiving and caregiver outcomes

Article Abstract:

This article examines the beneficial effects of a training intervention for people caring for family members with dementia. Findings indicate that the training program teaches caregivers to develop a more clinical perspective about their role which minimizes the emotional burden, feelings of depression, negative responses to patient behavior, and stress.
