Does marriage protect older people from distress? The role of equity and recency of bereavement
Article Abstract:
The association between marital status and distress in older people is examined taking into account both perceived equity within the marriage and time since partner loss by focusing on married persons, persons who were always single and widowed persons. Overall marriage does not appear to protect older people from psychological distress, widowed people appear to be able to adapt well to their new single role and though a happy marriage provides benefits, it does not appear to explain the higher levels of distress in single persons.
