Effect of age on potassium- and tyramine-induced release of norepinephrine from cardiac synaptosomes in male F344 rats
Article Abstract:
Sliced atria and cardiac synaptosomes in six-, 24- and 26-month-old male F344 rats were used to study the effect of aging on potassium- and tyramine-induced norepinephrine release. Six-month old rats had higher potassium-induced net fractional release of norepinephrine from synaptosomes and sliced atria compared to the older rats. Lack of calcium also decreased potassium-induced release of norepinephrine by 50% in the three age groups. Thus, old male F344 rats have decreased depolarization-induced norepinephrine release.

Effects of dietary restriction on the change in aortic alpha1-adrenoceptor mediated responses during aging in Fischer 344 rats
Article Abstract:
A study of the influence of norepinephrine (NE) on the aorta of Fischer 344 rats aged less than 24 months indicates that diet control restores the lowered NE-mediated Ca2+ influx and makes the alpha1-adrenoceptor responses independent of extracellular calcium during aging. Diet does not influence the age-related mitigation of NE-stimulated aortic contraction, while it reduces the inhibition of aortic contraction and inositol phosphate accumulation by nifedipine.

Expression of G protein alpha subunits in the aging cardiovascular system
Article Abstract:
Western blot analysis using various G protein antiserums provides the levels of G protein alpha subunits and the corresponding mRNAs in the aorta and heart of senescent and adult Fischer 344 rats. The cardiovascular system is unaffected by any changes in the alpha subunits of the G proteins. Aging does not lead to variations in G protein levels in the heart and the aorta.
