Change in disability follows inpatient treatment for late life depression

Article Abstract:

A longitudinal assessment study of 2572 patients aged 60+ has been carried out to look at the relationship between functional disability and improvement in late-life depression after acute inpatient treatment. Improvement in symptoms was significantly related to improvement in instrumental activities of daily living and to health-related quality of life. The disabling nature of depression has been substantiated. It appears that the effect of treating depression is not the only factor in the reversal of disability.
