Effects of stimulus integrality on visual attention in older and younger adults: a quantitative model-based analysis
Article Abstract:
Cognitive and perceptual processes are known to be affected by normal aging. A new study seeks to extend Hasker and Zacks's (1988) theory on inhibition deficit and applies a quantitative model-based analytical approach. The research investigates the effect of stimulus on visual attention in younger and older adults by presenting them with a series of visual attention tasks. The results suggest that there are no age differences in selective attention performance with separable-dimension or integral stimuli, with both younger and older observers equally affected by the integrality-separability manipulation. Further findings from the study are discussed.

Production and perception of "verbosity" in younger and older adults
Article Abstract:
Research suggests that younger adults produce less off-topic speech (OTS) than older adults during narratives and it is hypothesized that older people are less able to inhibit irrelevant information. A new study shows that older adults produced more OTS speech than their younger cohorts in autobiographical interviews but not for picture topics. The survey supports the Pragmatic Change theory which suggests that older adults are more concerned with emphasizing the significance of their past life events than younger adults.
