Elder abuse in a land of tradition: the case of Israel's Arabs
Article Abstract:
It is commonly believed that traditional societies respect their elders and place a high value on their wisdom. However, rapid social changes in such groups are often unfavourable to the elderly, whose status may decline. A study designed to analyse the changing attitudes to the elderly in an Arab community in Israel shows that Arab elderly have a 2.5% incidence of abuse and neglect, with abuse patterns similar to those in the West. The findings support the theory that elder abuse is amplified by modernization.
