Elder abuse in the Republic of Ireland
Article Abstract:
Elder abuse in Ireland has yet to receive official recognition. There are no specific social policies to counter the violence against the aged. Community services and self-help programs that teach the victims to be more assertive in their claims have had some success in this field. Unemployment among youth and emigration to urban areas in search of jobs has resulted in the social isolation of the elderly. The response to the problem of elder abuse must be developed within a framework of socio-cultural, political and social environment.

Elder abuse in a forming society: Israel
Article Abstract:
The traditional practice of old-age support by the family members is one of the reasons for the late realization of the problem of elder abuse in Israel. Immigration has resulted in a rapidly growing elder population. Risks for elder abuse exist in family settings, in service networks and in residential environments. The 1989 Protection of Helpless Persons Law was a first step in controlling abuse. Further policy measures are needed.
