Final-year-of-life pacemaker recipients
Article Abstract:
Eighteen percent of the U.S. residents who had a pacemaker implanted in 1963 at the age of 65 survived not more than a year after receiving the implant. These patients were not terminally ill or inactive, but were relatively independent and physically functional pacemaker candidates. The candidates frequently died in an abrupt manner.
