Functional impairment in instrumental activities of daily living: an early clinical sign of dementia?
Article Abstract:
Certain deficiencies in Instrumental Activities of Daily Living (IADL) may be a measure of early dementia. Elderly people living in a French community were categorized according to IADL scores in four areas: telephone use, transportation skills, taking medication, and handling their finances. Dependencies in these IADLs predicted the onset of dementia within three years. Increased impairment predicted the risk of dementia at five years.
