Identifying and addressing the issues of elder abuse: a rural perspective
Article Abstract:
The prevalence of domestic violence in Australia has long been ignored, although there has been increased awareness of the problem since the issue was highlighted at a national level in 1989. The neglect and abuse of elderly people was largely overlooked in Australia until 1990, despite the subject receiving greater publicity elsewhere. A study, in rural north western New South Wales, is designed to provide information that can be used by local care providers to formulate strategies for services for elderly people. The study of 598 clients, of whom 33 were found to be abused, identifies health problems, abuse rates and interventions offered.

Investigating suspected elder maltreatment
Article Abstract:
It is important to exhaustively examine recorded cases of elder maltreatment to establish the seriousness of the situation and to provide protective services wherever necessary. It is important to document findings in a logical and clear fashion as this will serve to justify the final course of action. The methodology to be adopted during such examination is detailed.
