Osteoarthritis in older adults
Article Abstract:
Osteoarthritis is caused by degeneration of joint cartilage and is a common joint disease in the elderly. Researchers continue to search for a simple marker that will allow physicians to detect the disease early enough to delay its progression. Pain relief is the most important treatment, and physical therapy may prevent or compensate for functional deficits. It is not clear whether osteoarthritis increases the risk of falling.

Sleep complaints in community-dwelling older persons: prevalence, associated factors, and reported causes
Article Abstract:
A large percentage of elderly people appear to suffer from insomnia. A survey of 2,398 elderly people in one Italian town found that 36% of the men and 54% of the women had occasional bouts of insomnia. Depression and the use of sleep medications was linked to insomnia. Night awakening was the most common complaint and was associated with depression. Physical disability was associated with awakening and not feeling rested.
