Strength, physical activity, and body mass index: relationship to performance-based measures and activities of daily living among older Japanese women in Hawaii
Article Abstract:
Women who remain lean and strong throughout old age may have better outcomes. Researchers gave physical performance tests to 705 Japanese women aged 55 to 93 and also measured quadriceps, grip and triceps strength. Greater strength was associated with better performance on the tests. Increased body mass index was associated with poorer performance. Women who were physically active also performed better on the tests.

The relationship between insomnia and mortality among community-dwelling older women
Article Abstract:
Research indicates that insomnia in elderly women is not a predictor of mortality. Definitions of insomnia included difficulty falling asleep, wakefulness at night and waking too early, and were analyzed according to a timeline. Recent cases of insomnia were not significant for mortality in results adjusted for prescription medicine usage, age, functional impairment or chronic conditions.

Sarcopenia, calf circumference, and physical function of elderly women: a cross-sectional study
Article Abstract:
Results show that calf circumference is not an effective predictor of sarcopenia, or loss of musculoskeletal mass, in elderly women. However, it does offer valuable information on physical function and muscle-related disability for this population.
