The balance of exchange in instrumental support with network members outside the household
Article Abstract:
The interplay of providing support to and receiving help from persons outside the household is examined along six instrumental aid categories, across six types of network members outside the home and relative to five sociodemographic characteristics. The instrumental support aids are in the form of housework, house maintenance, transportation, child care, financial support and personal care. Network members include son, daughter, parent, sibling, other relative and friend/neighbor. Socioeconomic characteristics refer to age, gender, social class, availability of social relations and health status.

How does formal and informal community care affect nursing home use?
Article Abstract:
Investigations of nursing home use by disabled elderly people show higher rates of nursing home use among people receiving formal community services, while those receiving informal care exhibit less risk of nursing home use. The possibility of nursing home use increases in cases in which formal services are provided in addition to informal care. The sex of the caregiver also influences nursing home use, as is evident from the higher risk exhibited by people with male caregivers.
