Three millennia of delirium research: moving beyond echoes of the past
Article Abstract:
Three millennia of delirium research are discussed. It is not easy to differentiate between delirium and dementia, no matter what the instrument. Creativity is important in research and emphasis on great methodological rigor may get in the way of creativity. Engaging colleagues, expanding the level of awareness, including many kinds of professionals, engaging the public, including patients and caregivers, and keeping eyes and ears open for serendipitous observations that give clues are important. Science still advances in the same ways, despite today's sophistication. Delirium's time will have come when it is featured in the popular press.
