Responding to disasters

Article Abstract:

Engineers have organized themselves to form Engineers for Disaster Relief, a charity organization which aims to respond to disasters by providing immediate relief and services. These engineers from various fields devote their time and expertise to alleviate the consequences of the disaster. The organization trains the engineers to cope with harsh situations while other institutions contribute food, lodgings and other basic necessities. The engineers also undergo screening to ensure that those who are well-equipped will be sent on missions.

Mixed blessing

Article Abstract:

Republics were set up in Latin America as the colonial rulers lost their grip in the 19th century. Simon Bolivar's vision of republics proved more accurate than Jose de San Martin's plan for European monarchs to govern Latin America. Spanish domination of public office and trade was resented, and Spain's authority was undermined by the invasion of Spain by France in 1808. Black slaves and Indians were feared by the elite, and large landowners used forced labor.
