Caring for internationally adopted children
Article Abstract:
Children adopted from other countries should have an extensive physical exam and medical tests when they enter the US. Many of these children may have hepatitis B, intestinal parasites, tuberculosis, syphilis, lead poisoning, and anemia, as well as emotional and mental problems. Diseases can be identified during screening, but emotional and mental problems may take longer to surface. A 1999 report discusses a nine-year-old boy adopted from the Marshall Islands who had tuberculosis and transmitted it to many other people, including members of his adopted family, school classmates, and day-care providers.

Affirmative action in action: its past & its future
Article Abstract:
Panelists at the ABA Annual Meeting's "Affirmative Action in Action: Its Past and Its Future" discussed the continued value of affirmative action as well as why it is being criticized of late. Programs that rely on statistics and quotas are the result of bureaucracy and are not consistent with the spirit of affirmative action. Using socio-economic indicators instead of race would not be acceptable because minorities at various financial levels suffer discrimination.
