Bertrand Russell and the end of nationalism

Article Abstract:

Bertrand Russell uncovered serious problems with various approaches to end nationalism. Like modernists, Russell believed that growth in global economy has rendered all forms of reactionary or progressive nationalisms obsolete. Although his modernism promised 'End of Nationalism,' he found nationalism taking rebirth in the womb of modernity. This led Russell to divide cultural nationalism from political nationalism. However, this view also had problems, since cultural nationalism needs a political structure to sustain it. In the 1960s he agin opted the position of the mid-19th century liberals.

(I can't get no) enjoyment: Lacanian theory and the analysis of nationalism

Article Abstract:

The way in which the Lacanian theory can increase the understanding of nationalism in ways that constructionist and modernist approaches to the subject are unable to do, is explored. The analytical angle offered by the Lacanian concept of enjoyment (jouissance) explains how national identifications remain stable and forceful within modernity and it is concluded that Lacanian psychoanalysis has the potential to construct a more comprehensive theory of nationalism.
