Change in societal technology and development, 1950-1990
Article Abstract:
The 1950-1990 sample of global technological change cannot be generalized due to the absence of less developed countries in the sample. A separate analysis of six global regions for 1970-1990 reveals that different technological levels and patterns of change have occurred in different global regions. The application of Frisbie and Clarke's index in a cross-national analysis of life expectancy at birth reveals that societal technology is more related to life expectancies of national populations. This measure can also explain the gap between economic and human development in low and middle-income regions.

Non-linear dynamics versus development processes: two kinds of change
Article Abstract:
A number of economists now use non-linear dynamics in physics to provide an endogenous theory of change. However, recent research indicates that non-linear dynamics is suitable only for the study of fluctuations such as business cycles. It is not appropriate for change related to technological and institutional development. Dynamics and development are very different types of change, and it is vital that economists are able to distinguish between them.

The patent and the Malanggan

This article examines the cultural aspects of intellectual property rights, focusing on the creation and temporal use of sculptures called Malanggan produced by indigenous peoples on New Ireland, off the coast of Papua New Guinea. This article examines Eastern and Western conceptions of technology, art, and nature, and how in Western culture patenting has fostered a gap between 'nature' and 'technology.'
