Ecology and community
Article Abstract:
The worse environmental disasters caused by man such as the Love Canal, Three Mile Island, Bhopal and Chernobyl have made ordinary citizens more aware of environmental problems. This has caused community groups to form networking groups to exert pressure on politicians and industrialists. Such activism should have three components: a legal and political component using legislation, fines and incentives; a technological component for developing environment-friendly technology; and a psychological and cultural component which involves a change in the social values of people.

The impact of zoning on residential land value in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia
Article Abstract:
Zoning in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, has resulted in differential impact on the price of residential property in the city. A regression analysis model, which incorporates the lot attributes and the existing zoning laws in the city, has determined that unit price of residential lots varies with zoning regulations pertaining to utilization and building height. The analysis also noted an inverse correlation between unit price and lot size, distance from the seafront and the Central Business District and other public utilities aside from water.

The value and future of the community: a conversation with Suzanne Keller
Article Abstract:
Sociologist Suzanne Keller says there is no universal definition of what makes a community but is generally considered to be a group of human beings bound by direct physical contact, symbolic affinities and a sense of enclosure. Keller, who is also a professor at Princeton University, added that societies are made up of communities but the former cannot be treated as communities. Communities are places where people learn to become social beings.
