Clean elections in Illinois next?
Article Abstract:
The Illinois Clean Elections Bill was modeled on the Maine Clean Elections law, which provides for voluntary contributions for those candidates who raise enough money to show their seriousness as a candidate. The Maine Civil Liberties Union has argued that even the contributions limit in the law is unconstitutional, arguing not that the limits violate free speech but that they are too low. State Sen Ed Petka fears that contribution limits would make it hard to get people to run for office by restricting the funds they can raise.

Can campaign finance reform coexist with the First Amendment?
Article Abstract:
The controversy about money's influence on politics reflects the tension between the two ideals of equality and liberty. Campaign finance reform should go further than McCain-Feingold, banning all limits on campaign expenditures and contributions, as well as full disclosure of all contributions and of their source.
