Consuming materials: the American way
Article Abstract:
The nature of materials consumption in the U.S. is examined in terms of volume and environmental impact. The U.S. economy necessitates the use of plenty of materials. The types of materials used also differ with time thereby presenting environmental hazards. The future trend of consumption is determined by an interrelation of economic, demographic and technological factors, which, unfortunately, are not easily foretold. A decrease in materials consumption, however, is possible given advances in technology and an oversupply.
