Energy intensity, electricity consumption, and advanced manufacturing-technology usage
Article Abstract:
Manufacturing plants that use advanced-manufacturing technologies (AMTs) are less energy-intensive that those which do not. However, they rely more on electricity as a source of fuel. This was gleaned from the results of a study on the relationship between the use of AMTs and energy consumption trends in manufacturing facilities. Energy efficiency was generally higher for plants built from 1973-1983, when energy prices increased, than those constructed during other periods. Plant age also affected energy intensity, since older plants were found to be generally more energy-intensive and more dependent on fossil fuels than newer plants.

Measurement of dematerialization/materialization: a case analysis of energy saving and decarbonization in OECD countries, 1960-95
Article Abstract:
A conceptual framework for materialization and dematerialization was created along with a complete decomposition model for measuring the two concepts with respect to the energy usage of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). Data from 1960 to 1995 were analyzed which showed an increase in energy demand amounting to 3597.95 Mtoe. Improvements in energy efficiency decreased energy demand by 827.20 Mtoe while structural shifts decreased energy demand by 139.04 Mtoe. The results showed that the OECD achieved significant dematerialization.

Chemistry of social interactions
Article Abstract:
A study was conducted to characterize the sigmoid substitution curves based on interactions between two entities and their application to the physical and social sciences. Definitive equations were determined and used in a broad range of interactions. Results indicated that both types of applications supported a range of completion times which overlap. Findings also showed that variations in the substitution of concepts correlated with the rate of encounter of the two entities.
