Everybody should be allowed to love freedom: why asylum is so important
Article Abstract:
The experience of Romanian emigrant Ovidiu Banu illustrates the importance of asylum rights and the danger posed by Congressional action in 1996 that restricted the availability of those rights. Banu was jailed and beaten in his native country simply because he was a homosexual. He was able to obtain a visa to visit the US, applied for asylum as a victim of persecution in his home country and was granted asylum. Under newly enacted laws, he would have been subject to summary proceedings that are not appealable and would have probably been sent back to Romania.

Roadblocks to immigration: what to expect from reform
Article Abstract:
US immigration law and policy needs to follow a more balanced and fair approach than the one adopted by the Congress with the passage of legislation in 1996 that will limit asylum rights and deny government benefits to legal immigrants. Efforts to deter illegal immigration should focus on the borders and on employer sanctions. The US can control immigration effectively without denying due process rights, but Congressional Republicans appeared more interested in capitalizing on anti-immigrant sentiment than on enacting lasting reforms.
